"We
use a lapping machine for the initial flattening of freshly heat
treated blades or "irons" for hand planes. These are O-1 tool steel
hardened and tempered to RC 62 and have some distortion from heat
treating. We've searched for a couple years for an alternative abrasive
disc for use with our lapping machine. While the proprietary discs
available for the machine are good discs, they're outrageously
expensive.
We've tried discs from a number of sources and the
Blue Film Backed Abrasive PSA Discs from Abrasive Resource are the best
we've found. The film backing doesn't distort or roll ahead of the steel
being flattened, the abrasive film stays flat. The aluminum oxide
abrasive is long lasting, very nearly as long as the ceramic abrasive of
the proprietary discs from the lapping machine manufacturer.
The
adhesive on the discs from Abrasive Resource is superior to the
adhesive on the proprietary discs. It's tenacious enough to hold the
discs in place but also allows easy and quick replacement of discs. The
proprietary discs required the discs be heated for removal and residual
adhesive had to be removed with a solvent.
We find the Blue Film
Backed Abrasive discs from abrasive resource to be of very good quality,
economical for us to use, and labor saving as well."
